(Staff) GM recalls 49,000 cars to fix passenger air bags
General Motors Corp. said it is recalling 1996 Buick Skylarks and Oldsmobile Achievas to repair an instrument panel that might cause passenger-side air bags to fail. GM said that about 49,000 vehicles are affected by the recall and that owners will be notified. The company also said it has received no reports of injuries related to the problem. The Detroit-based automaker said that during an accident, there is a chance the passenger-side air bag might snag on a bracket, causing the bag to expand behind the instrument panel and lift it. Front-seat passengers could receive more severe injuries if they hit the instrument panel's broken bracket or if the air bags don't deploy properly, the company said. A plastic edge protector will be installed on the bracket at no cost to the owner, the company said. (Bloomberg) by CNB
