A 75-year-old Suffolk woman was killed in a car wreck Monday afternoon.
Police said she pulled into the path of a pickup truck while trying to make a left turn onto Godwin Boulevard from U.S. Route 58 Bypass about 12:25 p.m.
Alson Louise Thomas of the 100 block of Nancy Drive was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, who was in the car, and the driver of the pickup truck were injured.
Police officer D.T. Rupe said the driver of the truck, Gerardine Ann Nelms, 51, of the 5000 block of Riverfront Drive, Suffolk, swerved but was unable to avoid hitting Thomas' car.
Thomas apparently did not see the truck, which was headed north on Godwin - or U.S. Route 10 - as the pickup truck came over the hill, Rupe said. The truck hit the driver's side of the car and spun it around into the southbound lane, he said.
Nelms was taken by Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad to Obici Hospital. She was treated in the emergency room and released Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said. Thomas' daughter, Patricia Lee Arrington, 51, of the 11400 block of Tucker Swamp Road, Zuni, was flown by Sentara Nightingale helicopter ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was in stable condition Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said Nelms was wearing a seat belt, but Thomas and Arrington were not.
Traffic was blocked in both directions on Godwin for about an hour until the scene was cleared. Nightingale landed in the northbound lanes of the divided highway. ILLUSTRATION: JOHN H.SHEALLY II
