Two inmates escaped early Tuesday from the same hole at the Hertford County jail in Winton that allowed five other county prisoners to flee on Dec. 13.
One of the newest escapees was quickly captured and the other was captured later Tuesday, according to information received from the office of Hertford County Sheriff Winfrey Hardy, whose headquarters are 50 yards from the jail.
Jailers said Thomas Brown, 24, of Raleigh, was captured late Tuesday.
Shawn Outlaw , 25, of Ahoskie, was recaptured and back in another cell within hours of the escape. Police said both men had been held on several auto theft and other charges.
Officials offered no explanation of how the men got to the hole that had not been repaired since the Dec. 13 jail break, officials said. Sheriff Hardy was quoted by aides as saying repairs could not be made until a jail construction inspector arrived from the Department of Corrections in Raleigh.
The five prisoners who wriggled through the cell hole Dec. 13 have all been recaptured.
After the first jail break, the cell supposedly was kept securely locked to prevent more escapes.
