ADMIRALS DEAL 2 FOR RUSSIAN DEFENSEMAN

The Hampton Roads Admirals rang in the New Year by trading two players to reacquire Alex Krivchenkov, a standout Russian defenseman under contract to the Pittsburgh Penguins who played part of last season for the Admirals.

Krivchenkov spent the second half of last season and most of this season with Cleveland of the IHL before being assigned by Pittsburgh two weeks ago to Johnstown of the ECHL.

On Tuesday night, the Admirals reached an agreement with Pittsburgh and Johnstown to send defenseman Dan Harrison and forward Denis Lamoureux to Johnstown in exchange for Krivchenkov.

Lamoureux and Harrison are offensive-oriented players. Krivchenkov has scoring ability but is best known as a rugged, durable defender.

``It was a good deal for both clubs,'' Admirals general manager and assistant coach Al MacIsaac said. ``We got the player we felt we needed and they added some goal scoring, which they needed.''

Krivchenkov, a native of Siberia, adds to the international flavor of the Admirals, whose 17-man roster includes German goalie Rob Seliger, Ukrainian defenseman Alex Alexeev and several French-speaking Canadians, in addition to English-speaking Americans and Canadians.

MacIsaac said Krivchenkov will be in uniform Friday when the Admirals host South Carolina.
