Melvin Jack Haskins, 80, of the 2500 block of Villa Circle, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was a native of Norfolk and the son of Linwood and Louise Warren-Haskins. He retired after 33 years service as a chipper for Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth. He was a 57-year member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, dedicated to Second Calvary's many affiliations over the years. He served on the trustee board, male ushers and also as sexton for the church. He was an avid outdoor sportsman with hunting being his favorite sport. He was a member of the Old Buck Hunt Club of Gates County, N.C. Mr. Haskins was a Golden Heritage member of the NAACP, serving for many years on the board of directors of the Norfolk branch of the NAACP. He was committed to enrolling individuals as life members of the NAACP and had sold more life memberships than anyone in the history of the NAACP nationwide.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen Haskins of the home; a daughter, Alice Givens; five sisters, Virginia Edton, Marjie Blyth, Lillian Redd, Catherine Wiggins and Barbara Whitfield; five brothers, Victor Haskins, Herman A. Haskins, Lawrence Haskins, Howard Haskins and Beminto Haskins; and five grandchildren; two godchildren, Aaron Bridgers and Ian Bridgers.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Second Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Geoffrey V. Guns. Burial will be in Little Gilfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor, Va. Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
