Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Richard Ralph Garriott, 83, of the 200 block of Amberly Road, died Tuesday Dec. 31, 1996, in Norfolk.
Cmdr. Garriott was born in Oldham, Ky., and had retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service. Following his naval career he was the deputy clerk of the Virginia Beach Circuit Court for 16 years.
He was one of the founding members of Holland Road Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, having served as a deacon and as the finance chairman. Cmdr. Garriott was a 41-year member and a past president of the Kempsville Ruritan Club and was named Ruritan of the Year in 1993. He was a Mason. He was one of the organizers of Kempsville Pony Baseball and was instrumental in the construction of its baseball complex in the late 1950s and was recognized by Kempsville Pony Baseball for his service from 1958 to 1963.
Cmdr. Garriott served in the Pacific during the entire Second World War. During his naval career, he was twice awarded the Bronze Star as well as the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with two stars. He and his wife chaired the USS Tennessee Battleship Reunion. A dedicated family man, he enjoyed wood working and furniture building.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred C. Garriott; two sons and their wives, Richard E. and Grace Marie Garriott and Micheal H. and Jane H. Garriott, all of Virginia Beach. Cmdr. Garriott is also survived by five grandchildren, Richard E. Garriott Jr., Beth Anne Campbell, Elizabeth H. Garriott, Holly Marie Garriott, M. Huntley Garriott Jr., as well as a great-granddaughter, Madison R. Garriott.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Holland Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert F. Pittman III. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, and at other times will be at 113 Conference Court, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to Holland Road Baptist Church, 4881 Euclid Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23466.
