John Gordon Floyd, of the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Blvd., entered into rest Dec. 29, 1996, at University Hospital in Augusta.
A native of Covington, Ga., he had retired as a manager for the Augusta Housing Authority. John was a graduate of Washington High School in Covington and Savannah State College. Following his service in the United States Army, he was employed by the Guaranty Life Insurance Company and later the Augusta Housing Authority where he worked as a manager for over 30 years. Following his retirement, he served as a substitute teacher in the Richmond County Public Schools.
He was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) serving in many capacities. He served as superintendent of the church school for over 30 years; as elder and clerk of the session; deacon and member of the S.S. Johnson Men's Organization. He also served in many unnamed capacities of the church working behind the scenes to assure the ongoing work of the church and its mission.
He was a member of the Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Savannah State College Alumni Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Ellis Floyd; two sons, Dr. John E. Floyd of Athens, Ga., and Dr. Joseph B. Floyd of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two sisters, Martha Floyd of Augusta and Carolyn Ramsey of Norfolk; two daughters-in-law, Juanita Floyd of Athens and Dr. Virginia Floyd of Stone Mountain; four grandchildren, Gregory Floyd, Leah Floyd, Lauren Floyd and Justin Floyd; a brother-in-law, Isaac Ramsey Sr. of Norfolk; two nephews, Isaac Ramsey Jr. of Los Angeles and Asa Floyd of Conyers, Ga.; a niece, Denise Ramsey of Norfolk; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Belle Terrace Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Melvin Lowery officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens. W. H. Mays Mortuary, Augusta, is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), 1316 Laney Walker Blvd., Augusta, Ga. 30901.
