IN THE COMMUNITY

Di Ricks of Norfolk has been named as a 1995-96 Unit Volunteer of the Year by the Virginia Division G1npeop03 Ricks of the American Cancer Society. Ricks was one of 40 volunteers from around the state who gathered at the Virginia Division's fall board meeting in Richmond in November.

The Rotary Club of Norfolk has elected its 1997-98 officers and board of directors. Those elected were Robert M. Latimer, president; Theodore Baker Jr., president elect; Richard M. Coradi, vice president; Morgan N. Trimyer Jr., secretary/treasurer; Kay A. Kemper, sergeant-at-arms; Robert L. Ash, David W. Davenport, J. Walton Grandy III, John C. McLemore, James P. O'Brien, Jean J. Owens and Jeremy R. Starkey, board of directors.

Allison Fitzgerald, the daughter of Kathy and Larry Fitzgerald ofG2npeop03 Fitzgerald Norfolk, was named Little Miss Virginia at the Little Miss Virginia Scholarship Achievement Program in Roanoke in November. She also won the talent award for her division and an educational scholarship bond.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class General H. Venable, a 1992 graduate of Norview High School and the son of General H. Venable Sr. of Norfolk, has departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the guided missile cruiser Vella Gulf.

Marine Pfc. Warren T. Collins, a 1995 graduate of Lake Taylor High School and the son of Warren

T. Collins of Norfolk, completed the Heavy Vehicle Operators Course with the Marine Corps Detachment, U.S. Army Engineer School, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Navy Seaman Recruit Juanita D. Lawrence, a 1996 graduate of Granby High School and the daughter of retired Navy 1st Class Petty Officer and Mrs. Gerald E. Pratt of Norfolk, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ellen V. McKemy, whose husband David is the son of Peggy Counts of Norfolk, received a Letter of Commendation while assigned with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 59, Naval Air Station, Dallas.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Rene E. Serrano, son of Linda M. Serrano of Norfolk, has departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the attack submarine Atlanta.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Migdalia Rolon, daughter of Alicia Rivera of Norfolk, received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal while serving with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 120, Naval Air Station, Norfolk.

Navy Seaman Recruit Angelo H. Galindo, a 1996 graduate of Granby High School and the son of Miguel H. and Anna Marie E. Galindo of Norfolk completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

The following have returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the amphibious assault ship Saipan, the lead ship and flagship of the Saipan Amphibious Ready Group:

- Navy Airman Duane M. Sanders, whose wife, Jacquelyn, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Levy of Norfolk.

- Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class James B. Powell, whose wife, Angela, is the daughter of Calvin L. Ryland of Norfolk.

- Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Curtis Alston, whose wife, Clara, is the daughter of Cameron Manuel of Norfolk.

- Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Gabriel Vazquez, whose wife, Bonita, is the daughter of Elvin Rollins of Norfolk.

CAMPUS NOTES

Kelly Barfield, Kathleen Duncan, Kathleen Hawkins and Patricia Quinn were named to the director's list for the fall semester at Bon Secours-DePaul Medical Center School of Nursing in Norfolk.

Nicole L. Crane of Norfolk has been named to the dean's list for the 1996 fall semester at Virginia Intermont College, Bristol, Va.

Christopher Powell Jarvis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Angus I. Hines III of Norfolk, was recognized for academic excellence during the second grading period of this school year and named to the dean's list at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.
