ANDREW A. MOORE

Retired U.S. Naval Reservist Andrew A. ``Andy'' Moore AVCM of Avalon Woods Drive died Jan. 1, 1997.

He was born Jan. 9, 1940, in Lawrence, Mass. Warmed by the love and attention of his family and friends and cheered by the prayers and concern of his co-workers and many acquaintances, Andy slipped into the arms of morpheus for the last time Wednesday after a brief, brutal encounter with pancreatic cancer. At his side, as she has been since their childhood, was his beloved wife of 36 years, Phyllis; daughters, A.J. Eller and Alison Wright; son-in-law, Mark Eller; sister, Bonnie Bourdelais; and friends, Bob, Maureen, Kelly and Beth LaGreca, Pete and Johnnie Wright, Bill and Roz Hensor, Rich Riley, Hazel Lewis, Matt Meyer and Shawn and Kiersta Daily.

Andy retired as a plank owner from VR-56, which remains to this day Navy Norfolk's own jet airline, in 1977 as a command master chief and aircraft maintenance chief. He continued to work for the Navy as a contractor in calibration-related programs, becoming known to sailors in Navy ships and facilities from Maine to Mississippi, from Iceland to Puerto Rico. Given the chance to work again in aviation, Andy joined the Naval Aviation Depot work force, putting new wings and weapons systems in aging A-6 bombers. During this time, Andy appeared as anchorman on the ``NADEP News,'' an in-house cable television weekly. He loved doing this because it gave him the opportunity to meet thousands of his co-workers whom he might never have known. Andy retired from the Depot due to his illness about the time the facility was closed in what he maintained was a demonstration of excessive bureaucratic stupidity.

Andy is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Andrea J. Eller, R.N., Capt. USAR, and her husband, Mark C. Eller, STGCS, USN, of Crofton, Md., Alison L. Wright and her husband, Alan V. Wright of Santa Cruz, Calif.; father, James Moore; and sisters, Bonnie Bourdelais of Massachusetts; brothers, Glen Moore of Washington and Stephen Moore of Minnesota.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on January 11 in Unity Renaissance Church, 1120 North Eden Way, Chesapeake. The Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, is in charge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to the American Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research and family assistance, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513, or call 800-227-2345.
