The New Year's holiday may be over, but winter is taking a vacation.
Springlike weather is in store through the weekend for Hampton Roads and the Outer Banks, complete with April showers and May temperatures, with highs around 70.
The last time it has been this warm to start the year was in the mid-'60s.
The average high for this time of year in Norfolk is 48; the low, 32. But the record high, which could fall today, is 70, set in 1966.
And if the mercury surges just a little beyond what is forecast over the next few days, some even older Norfolk records could be threatened.
Saturday: 75, set in 1950.
Sunday: 73, in 1950.
Monday: 75, in 1950.
Thursday's high at the National Weather Service office at Norfolk International Airport was 57 - 9 degrees above normal. The low was equally above the norm, at 41.
Here's the Hampton Roads forecast:
Today: Mostly cloudy this morning, then partly sunny and warm. High around 70. Southwest winds at 10 to 15 mph.
