Elijah Thomas ``Red'' Sexton, 86, of the 5000 block of Parsons Lane, went to be with the Lord Jan. 2, 1997.
A native of Washington County, N.C., he was born on May 26, 1910. He was the son of the late Elijah Turner and Alethia Viola Sexton. Captain Sexton retired after more than 30 years of civil service as Chief of Navy Pilots N.O.B. He followed the water most of his adult life from deck hand to tug boat captain to Chief Pilot.
He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk and a Mason for over 50 years with George W. Wright Lodge (NU)346.
He was a faithful and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Wilkins Sexton; two daughters, June Marie Sexton of Virginia Beach and Joyce Sexton Dudley of Georgia; a son, Elijah Thomas Sexton Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jerrie L. Sexton of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Daniel T. Dudley, Virginia L. Klein, David W. Dudley of Georgia and Chad L. Sexton and Jennifer S. Pace of Virginia Beach; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will be at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association.
