Georgie Battley Walker McCallum, widow of Claude Scott McCallum and the daughter of the late Frank W.W. Walker and Julia E. Sullivan died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997.
She was born on July 21, 1908, on Redgate Avenue in Norfolk at the home of her maternal grandmother, Lucy L. Carter Battley, and has been a resident of Westminster-Canterbury since 1988. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jett W. Austin, and her grandson, Claude McCallum Zarn, USCG. She graduated from Maury High School in 1926 and served on the Class Reunion Committee.
Mrs. McCallum had been a member of St. Brides Episcopal Church and served on its Altar Guild. Very active in girl scouting, she was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and served on the board of the Tidewater Council of Girl Scouts. She was also a member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs, a charter member and past president of the Norfolk Doll Club, past president of the International Old Lacers and Tidewater Mini Buffs and member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Claudia Scott McCallum of Williamsburg; two granddaughters and their husbands, Carter Z. and David L. Overton of Chesapeake, and Elizabeth Z. and Leo Drew of Lake Orion, Mich.; a grandson and his wife, Bowen Scott and Patricia S. Zarn of Orlando, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica B. Littleton of Christianburg, Taylor A.S. and Madison V.G. Overton of Chesapeake, Aubrey S., Adam L. and Evan W. Drew of Lake Orion, Dalton McCallum Zarn of Orlando, and Ashley E. Nelson of Virginia Beach; two nieces, Barbara W. Miller of Norfolk, and Patricia W. Pilson of Virginia Beach; and six great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Westminster-Canterbury Chapel, Virginia Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, 23507. The family will be at 1002 Oaklette Ave., Chesapeake. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements.
