DR. BENNETT SALASKY

Born in Norfolk in 1902, Bennett Salasky, 94, enjoyed life to the fullest. Dr. Salasky died Jan. 3, 1997.

He graduated from the New York School of Optometry in 1925 and was admitted to the State Board of Examiners the same year. He practiced optometry locally for over 60 years. To the patients whose lives he touched over the decades, he was friend and confidant.

Dr. Salasky served in the Army National Guard where he was battalion correspondent. A lifelong member of Beth El Synagogue, he served on the congregation's Board of Directors and most notably attended the daily minyan regularly for 40 years.

A member of numerous civic and charitable organizations, he was most proud of his association with the Hampton Roads World Affairs Council. He was an Honorary Founding Director of that organization. In his late 80s he became involved with the Norfolk Department of Development, parent organization of the Ambassador Club of the city he loved.

He was a devoted member of the Arnold Gamsey Lodge of B'nai B'rith, believing fervently in the work of the organization's Anti-Defamation League. He served as chairman of B'nai B'rith blood drive for many years.

Dr. Salasky's unique style and flair were captured by the trademark flower in his lapel. He was his own man.

Dr. Salasky is survived by his adoring children, Stan Jackson Salasky and his wife Beverly Salasky of Dallas, Marilyn Salasky Siegel and her husband Dr. Ken Siegel of Virginia Beach; his granddaughter, Lauren Salasky of Dallas; and grandsons Daniel and Andrew Siegel of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. Stanley Salasky of Norfolk, Leonard Salasky of Sacramento; and his sister, Bernice Glickfeld of San Francisco. He was pre-deceaced by his siblings Dr. Arthur Salasky, Dr. Milton Salasky, Sadie Ostin and Ruth (Honey) Siegel.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family requests any memorial donations be made to Congregation Beth El. The family will be at the Siegel residence, 1421 Cherry Lane, Virginia Beach, Va. 23454. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
