GUS N. SKALTSOUNIS

Gus N. Skaltsounis, who with his late brother founded Arthur's Grill, Norfolk, died Jan. 3, 1997, in a local hospital.

Serving Norview for more than 35 years, the restaurant became a landmark during the area's heyday. Mr. Skaltsounis, who was born near Sparta, Greece, immigrated to America in 1931 at the age of 14.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the 71st Infantry Division under Patton's 3rd Army, seeing action in both the Battle of the Rhineland and the Battle of Central Europe.

Mr. Skaltsounis was a 50-year member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 39 and VFW Post No. 4809.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Evelyn K. Skaltsounis; daughter, Helen G. Skaltsounis of Arlington, Va., and Madrid, Spain; two sons, Nicholas D. Skaltsounis and his wife, Martha, of Richmond and Michael J. Skaltsounis and his wife, Annette, of Arlington; and a granddaughter, Alexandria.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family requests that any contributions be made in Mr. Skaltsounis' name to the American Cancer Society or the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Norfolk.
