Janie L. Stewart, 84, of the 900 block of Warfield Drive died Jan. 2, 1997, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A co-owner and operator of Sears General Store, Norfolk, she operated the family business. She also ran the first sub-station post office in Virginia on Chapel Street, Norfolk. She was a native of South Mills, N.C., and the widow of James Stewart. She was a member and choir member of First Baptist Church, South Hill, Norfolk.
Survivors include her two daughters, Shirley A. Elliott of Portsmouth and Janet McCray of Virginia Beach; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Jethro Clemons. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the mausoleum prior to the funeral service.
