It was refreshing to read your excellent Dec. 30 editorial about my native city, Portsmouth. Too often we have been the object of negative publicity that marred our image in the Hampton Roads community.
Portsmouth is a wonderful place to live and work and is definitely on the move! The many positive accomplishments referenced in your editorial will continue to grow in 1997. Our relations with the military commands in our city have never been better and will improve even more under Mayor Jim Holley and City Council Military Liaison representative Tommy Benn. The New Tidewater Community College Visual Arts Center, in downtown Portsmouth, is the only facility of its kind in Virginia and attracts students from 12 surrounding Virginia communities and seven other states. Willett Hall, under the direction of Ports Events, is scheduling major entertainers and programs that attract audiences from Portsmouth and surrounding cities.
These are but a few among a large list of positive actions currently in progress. Portsmouth will continue to improve because of the dedication of its leaders, citizens and military neighbors.
