WILLIAM O. BOWERS JR.

William O. Bowers Jr. of the 2300 block of Locks Landing, died Jan. 3, 1997, in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

Mr. Bowers was born in Portsmouth and was retired as an electrician from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member, deacon, trustee and usher of Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was a member of Mount Gilead Lodge (NU)102, Order of Masons; member of William H. Harrison Post (NU)190, American Legion; a retired Army veteran of the Korean War and member of the 24th Infantry Division.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby M. Bowers; two daughters, Wanda D. Blount of Hampton and Vida D. Wilson of Detroit, Mich.; two sons, William O. Bowers III and Kenneth M. Bowers, both of Portsmouth; a sister, Dorothy Melson of Portsmouth; four brothers, Alvin A. Bowers and Otis Bowers, both of Portsmouth, Nathaniel Bowers of New York City and Alfred Bowers of Oakland, Calif.; eight grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Vincent Porter of Norfolk; and a special friend, Ann Baker of Portsmouth. He was predeceased by a son, Keith M. Bowers.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Charles W. Beamon. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, with military honors and Masonic rites. Viewing will begin at noon Tuesday in Corprew Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family will be at the church at 6 p.m. Tuesday for the wake.
