Joseph J. Martin, of the 1200 block of Strand St., died Jan. 2, 1997, in DePaul Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Martin was born in Norfolk on May 11, 1930. He was lifelong resident of Norfolk. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed for many years by Shelly-Globe Manufacturing Co. and Millers Dairy until his retirement.
He was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church where he attended faithfully for many years, until his health prevented it. He served as a member of the male usher board.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Louise D. Martin; two sons, Lorenzo Alexander of Washington, D.C., Darvin Alexander of Norfolk; two daughters, Mrs. Ewaine Richardson of Philadelphia, Mrs. Valerie Harris of Atlantic City, N.J.; five stepchildren, Rhonda Bryer, Margaret Noora, Melinda White, Michelle Noora, Michael Noora, all of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Mary Butts of Norfolk; four brothers, Mr. Willie Butts Jr., Mr. Leonard Butts and Mr. Dwayne R. Butts of Norfolk, Mr. James Butts of Hampton; five sisters, Mrs. Lelia B. Haynes of Hampton, Mrs. Mary Patterson, Ms. Doris Butts of Norfolk, Mrs. Alma Drummond of Newport News, Mrs. Cynthia Royster of Chesapeake; two uncles, Mr. William Martin of Lynchburg, Va., Mr. Bruce Martin of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Queen Street Baptist Church, Norfolk. The Rev. Peter Wherry will deliver the eulogy. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
