NEW MONSIGNOR TITLES BESTOWED ON AREA PRIESTS

Eight Catholic priests with local ties are among 13 in the Richmond diocese to be given the title Monsignor.

Bishop Walter F. Sullivan bestowed the honors Monday. The title is given to priests who have distinguished themselves at parish and diocesan levels.

Among the honorees are:

Walter F. Barrett, 49, pastor of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Basilica in Norfolk. He has been with the Norfolk parish for almost 12 years.

Raymond A. Barton, 56, former pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Norfolk and a founding co-pastor of the Anglican/Roman Catholic parish in Hampton Roads. He is now pastor of Holy Comforter Church in Charlottesville and vicar for ecumenism for the diocese.

Thomas J. Caroluzza, 65, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Virginia Beach and Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Vicariate of the Diocese. He was the founding pastor of Resurrection Church in Portsmouth and is a former principal of Norfolk Catholic High School.

Michael D. McCarron, 45, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News and director of vocations promotion and recruitment.

Robert M. Perkins, 51, former pastor of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hampton and now vicar general of the diocese and diocesan vicar for priests.

William L. Pitt, 63, principal of Catholic High School in Virginia Beach and former pastor of Immaculate Conception in Hampton and Christ the King in Norfolk.

J. Kenneth Rush, 52, a former faculty member at Norfolk Catholic High and now pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Lynchburg.

William V. Sullivan, 55, former pastor of Star of the Sea Parish in Virginia Beach and now pastor of St. Ann Parish in Ashland and judicial vicar for the marriage tribunal.

A ceremony of recognition is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in St. Mary's Basilica in Norfolk.
