The Mayor's Commission on Aging will hold its first neighborhood meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Beazley Senior Center, 268 Owens St.
Starting this month, members of the commission will meet at neighborhood facilities and churches instead of City Hall in an effort to identify the needs of older people and give them a civic voice.
The meetings will be informal. After a brief introduction of the commissioners and an explanation of the group's goals, residents will have a chance to speak in an open forum.
Every third month, the commission will meet at City Hall to discuss what they've learned and to come up with solutions to residents' problems.
Next month, the commission will meet at 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at Pinecrest Baptist Church, 209 Felton Road.
Call Dianne Elliott, president of the Mayor's Commission on Aging, at 483-1780 for information.
``Any senior from the city of Portsmouth can come,'' Elliott said. ``What we're trying to do is meet in people's own localities to make it convenient for them to meet on their own turf. We feel like they'll be more receptive and more open to voice their concerns if we're on their own territory.''
