Valerie McConnell Hamill, 63, of the 1400 block of Graydon Place, died Jan. 6, 1997, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Hamill was born in Norfolk on Nov. 1, 1933. She was a former member, and a Sunday School teacher at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Norfolk, and was active in its fund-raising activities, donating her skills with cooking and crafts for the church bazaars. As a current member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk, she participated in many church groups and functions such as the Altar Guild, Habitat for Humanity, the Stewardship Committee, the Committee for New Members and Visitors, and the St. Mary's Soup Kitchen. She regularly attended Bible classes and had an overwhelming desire to learn about God and Christ. She was a former member of the Ruth Sargeant Circle of the King's Daughters, where she served as corresponding secretary. She had provided voluntary services for Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and the American Red Cross. She was a former member of the Civic Auxiliary Group, La Sertoma, where she participated in craft projects. Her most immediate interests included daily contact with shut-ins.
Survivors include her husband, Walter F. Hamill Jr. of Norfolk; her daughter, Margaret Brooks Hamill-Smith of Norfolk; two granddaughters, Lauren Brooks Smith, Jillian Hamill Smith; two grandsons, Christopher James Smith, Joseph Martin Smith; her sister, Marilyn McConnell Graham and her husband, James T. Graham of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; her sister-in-law, Ann Hamill Smith of Virginia Beach; her stepbrother, Corydon M. Baylor Jr. and his wife, Sandra Sadler Baylor; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at noon Thursday in The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the corner of Hampton Blvd. and North Shore Roads, by the Rev. Ross Wright. A reception will follow in the church social-memorial hall immediately after the service.
Memorial donations may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
