ELIZABETH E. TONKIN

Elizabeth Eberwine Tonkin, 68, of the 3400 block of Knotts Neck Road, died Jan. 8, 1997.

A native of Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Earl Tourtellot and Edna Ashburn Eberwine. Mrs. Tonkin was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, where she served as chairman of the Altar Guild. She loved flowers and flower arranging and for many years and was a member of the Elizabeth River Garden Club. She was a member of the Fort Nelson Chapter of the DAR in Portsmouth, the Hampton Roads Yacht Club, a past president of the Driver Book Club and had formerly served on the Obici House Board of Directors.

Survivors include her husband, William Loraine Tonkin Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Annette T. and Michael Moring of Portsmouth; a son and daughter-in-law, Earl E. and Joanne Tonkin of Stanton, N.J.; four grandsons, William E. Tonkin, Joseph A. Tonkin, M. Brandon Moring and T. Ryan Moring.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond H. Edmonds, the Rev. E. Clifton Whitlock and the Rev. Richard Browder. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist Church, 450 Dinwiddie St., Portsmouth, Va. 23704, Bennett's Creek Rescue Squad, 3885 Bridge Road, Suffolk, Va. 23435 or to a charity of choice. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
