Hyde County is an example of a school system that legislators hoped most to help, Senate Pro Tem Marc Basnight said Wednesday after the State Board of Education approved an added $5.2 million in bond proceeds for the school system.
Hyde was one of several counties at risk of falling through the cracks when state leaders made plans to distribute $1.8 billion in bond money this spring.
So last year when senators were preparing a school construction bond for a vote in November, they also pushed to give small, poor counties with great needs an extra hand.
``It was the right thing for us to do for the education of our children, especially in school systems that most needed the help, like Hyde County does,'' said Basnight, D-Dare. ``North Carolinians showed their commitment to educational facilities when they approved the bond in November. And we showed our commitment to help all of the state's schools by creating a formula that helped the systems which needed it the most.''
