POLICE MAKE DRUG ARRESTS, SEIZE $54,000 IN COCAINE

A police officer made two drug arrests and confiscated nearly a kilo of crack cocaine worth about $54,000 during a traffic stop early Friday.

A third suspect escaped and remains at large.

Officer R.W. White was using radar on South George Washington Highway shortly after midnight when he stopped a 1995 Hyundai near George Washington Highway and Cornland Road for speeding.

He asked for and was given permission to search the car, said Elizabeth Jones, a police spokeswoman.

White, Officer M.A. Rushak and Canine Officer K.W. Mclendon conducted the search and found a bag containing 27 1-ounce packets of cocaine. Each small bag has a street value of about $2,000.

The driver fled and is being sought. He was identified as James A. Morris, 29, whose last known address was in Edenton, N.C. He was described as a 6-foot 2-inch black man weighing 220 pounds.

He was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, obstruction of justice, and other traffic offenses.

Two passengers were arrested. Douglas L. Perry Jr., 24, of the 3200 block of Dunworken Drive in Chesapeake, was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

William M. Brownridge Jr. of the 1200 block of Hoover Ave. in Chesapeake was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, and resisting arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Line at 487-1234.
