Mr. Stuart McGuire Martin, 84, died Jan. 11, 1997.
Mr. Martin was a member of Severn United Methodist Church, a member of Severn-Pendleton Ruritan Club and a charter member of the Severn Fire Department. He served as town clerk for Severn from 1950 until his retirement in 1996. He was owner of the Stuart M. Martin Insurance Agency for many years and was elected to the Guildford College Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986. Mr. Martin played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1936 to 1940. In 1941 and 1942, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and in 1943 he played for the Chicago Cubs. In 1944, he entered the merchant marine and served during World War II. In 1947 and 1948, he was the manager for the Roanoke Rapids Jays ball team.
Survivors include his daughter, Carole M. Britt of Severn; two sons, Gene Martin of Milwaukee, N.C., and Stuart M. Martin Jr. of Maiden, N.C.; two brothers, Bernard Martin of Emporia and Harold Martin of Richmond; six grandchildren, Kevin Britt, Keith Britt, Tara Pigeon, Deidre Martin, Tammy Martin and Grant Martin; two great-grandsons, Joshua David Britt and Dillon Kevin Britt.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Severn United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Bowmen. Burial will follow in Severn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Severn United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the home. Jackson Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.
