James Edward Stallings Sr., 72, of Route 1 died Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Stallings was born in Gates County. The son of the late Asa R. and Mrs. Pastora Rountree Stallings, he was a retired farmer and produce dealer. He was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, where he had formerly served on the board of deacons. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Berryman Stallings; daughter, Marilyn S. Noble and her husband, Ed, of Hobbsville; son, J.E. Stallings Jr. and his wife, Rita, of Hobbsville; three sisters, Louise Parker and Hazel Hofler, both of Sunbury, and Mae Stallings of Portsmouth; three granddaughters, Michele Lake, Holly Stallings and Amber Stallings; and a great-granddaughter, Devon Lake.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. Vern Gilmer and the Rev. Hugh Mizelle. Burial will follow in the Stallings family cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad.
