The Rev. Thomas L. Hardmon, 77, of the 500 block of Orton St., died Jan. 11, 1997, in Sentara Nursing Center of Portsmouth.
Pastor emeritus of Macedonia Baptist Church, Newport News, Rev. Hardmon retired after 26 years' service. He was a native of Caroline County, Va., and a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was a member of the Peninsula Ministers Alliance Association and received elementary and high school educations at Union High School, Bowling Green, Va. After high school, Rev. Hardmon entered the college department of Virginia Union University, Richmond, where he received his A.B. degree in 1949, B.D. degree in 1952 and M.Div. degree in 1986.
After college, Rev. Hardmon did pastoral work in Albemarle County and Essex County, both in Virginia. In 1986-88, Rev. Hardmon taught Bible classes at the Evens-Smith Institute (a byproduct of Union University) at Second Baptist Church, Newport News.
Rev. Hardmon came to Macedonia Baptist Church in 1960, where he served faithfully for 26 years. Soon after being called as pastor of Macedonia, Rev. Hardmon was afflicted with multiple sclerosis, yet he served well until his retirement in 1987.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Hardmon; daughter, Deborah Carr and her husband, James Carr, of Portsmouth; son, Dale Hardmon of Portsmouth; sister, Alice Harris of Melford, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in Macedonia Baptist Church, 201 Pear Ave., Newport News, by the Rev. Alfred Terrell and the Rev. Joe B. Fleming. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Portsmouth. Visitation at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
