A 77-year-old woman was released on a promise to return to court Saturday after she was charged with killing her grandson.
Sarah Hardy of the 1000 block of Wolcott Ave. was freed Saturday on a $10,000 signature bond. She is charged with shooting her 29-year-old grandson, Clyde Maurice Daniels, late Friday.
Authorities do not consider Hardy a danger to the community and believe she will show up for court. They also considered her age and health in allowing her to go home.
Police spokesman Larry Hill said the killing, the first this year in Norfolk, was reported at 11:18 p.m. in Hardy's home in the Coronado section of the city. The victim and his mother lived with her.
Rescue workers pronounced Daniels dead at the scene at 11:25.
Investigators recovered the weapon used, but were not disclosing any details about it Saturday.
Hardy, who was questioned at the scene and then arrested, was charged with murder and using a firearm while committing a felony.
The shooting ``is a result of an ongoing dispute,'' Hill said, but ``that's all the details we can release about the motive.''
Hardy faces an arraignment hearing Monday at 10 a.m. in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Neighbors contacted Saturday were reluctant to talk about the shooting. One man who asked that his name not be used said he was not surprised by the killing, however.
The victim, he said, ``treated the woman bad.''
