DOROTHY B. HEREFORD

Dorothy ``Dottie'' Bruce Hereford, 71, passed away Jan. 13, 1997, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

She was born in Wichita, Kan., and resided in Virginia Beach for more than 30 years. She was married to retired Navy Capt. James D. Hereford, her husband for 50 years.

Dorothy attended Wichita State University with a full scholarship in fine arts. She was president of her sorority and reigned as May Queen her senior year of college. She was a member of Thalia United Methodist Church and a professional organist. Additionally, she was a member of Kempsville Womens Club, Thalia Garden Club, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Vivian Pelley of Wichita; son, James D. Hereford III of Severn, Md.; two daughters, Nancy L. Kissel of Chesapeake and Patricia H. Boward of Alexandria. She was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren, Donnie, Karen, Jonathan, Kyle, Kristen and Rachel. Dorothy will be missed by her many friends who loved her and were blessed to have their lives touched and enriched by her.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, Virginia Beach, with private burial for the family at Princess Anne Memorial Park. The Rev. Ralph Stalter will officiate. The family will receive friends at the home following the service from 2 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk.
