Your Jan. 9 editorial, ``Time to rename it again,'' was right on target. It would have struck the target with greater force, however, if The Virginian-Pilot practiced what it preaches.
It is true enough that provincialism is alive and well in Hampton Roads. Yet at the very heart of this provincialism is the fact that in the region which we propose to unite there are two separate newspapers, one on the Southside and the other on the Peninsula. While the smaller of the two, the Peninsula Daily Press, makes an effort to be regional, the much larger Virginian-Pilot does not. For those of us Southside who care what happens on the Peninsula, there is a paucity of information in The Virginian-Pilot.
Why can The Virginian-Pilot not take a leadership role in integrating news in eastern Virginia and North Carolina? Why can it not be the shining beacon of regional and national news from Richmond to Raleigh and beyond?
