PAUL W. MERRILL

Paul W. Merrill, 76, of the 500 block of Winwood Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, in a local hospital.

Born in Madison County, N.C., he was a painter for Naval Air Rework Facility, retiring with 30 years service. He was the son of the late Dorrie Cagle Merrill and Hardy H. Merrill. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and the Ed Cuthriell Bible class, Tidewater Beekeepers Association and for many years sold Dismal Swamp Honey. He was a member of South Norfolk Hunt Club and Portsmouth Moose Lodge (NU)898, and the Grassfield Ruritan Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Esther E. Merrill; stepdaughter, Dorothy Cahoon and her husband, Curtis, of Havelock, N.C.; two stepsons, Jimmy Green and his wife, Melissa, of Chesapeake, Jack Hilton and his wife, Cora Mae; a sister, Doris Williams of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Hardy E. Merrill and his wife, Cathie, of Mars Hill, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, by the Rev. Ernie Myers. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
