Thomas B. Garrett, 85, of the 900 block of Flintfield Crescent died Jan. 14, 1997, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
A retired boilermaker, Mr. Garrett had 30 years of service at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was a native of Hertford County, N.C., and the widower of Clatie C. Garrett. He was a member and past chairman of the deacon board and deacon of Centennial Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was involved in many activities of the church and served in various capacities. He was also a member of Doric Lodge No. 98, Order of Masons.
Survivors include his daughter, Evelyn G. Smith of Portsmouth; two sons, Melvin L. Garrett of Portsmouth and Burley L. Garrett of Oakland, Calif.; sister, Mary Jackson of Norfolk; brother, Abraham Garrett of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; four stepdaughters; a stepson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Centennial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Robert L. Addison. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth, with Masonic honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
