Charles Sidney Turner, 84, died Jan. 15, 1997.
Mr. Turner was one of the first three 1st sergeants ever in the Virginia State Police, retiring in 1972 after 33 years of service. He was a Hampton native and a member of First United Methodist Church, Hampton. He was a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge No. 266, AF&AM, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, Norfolk York Rite Bodies, Khedive Temple of the Shrine, Westminster Chapter No. 99, Order of the Eastern Star, Virginia State Police Association and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Powell Turner; stepdaughter, Betty Hare of Tyner, N.C.; two stepsons, Thomas R. Baker of Windsor, N.C., and Larry Baker of Norfolk; sister, Helen Williams of Hampton; and six grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Chaplain Trooper Russell Eley and retired Lt. Donald Brown. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
