CARLTON A. SEARS JR.

Carlton A. Sears Jr., 75, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Pardee Memorial Hospital.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he lived in Churchland before moving to Henderson County 10 years ago. He received his bachelor of science degree from Michigan State University in 1947 and in 1950 received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. He retired in 1985 as vice president of the Pacific Region for the Celanese Corp. He was a former employee of Virginia Chemicals. He was a member of St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He served with the U.S. Army, 11th Armored Division, during World War II.

Mr. Sears served as general partner and director for Kenmure Enterprises, was one of the founding members and served on the board of trustees for the Pardee Hospital Foundation. He served on the board of trustees for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and was board chairman for the UNC-Charlotte Japan Center. He served on the board of trustees for the North Carolina State Theatre (Flat Rock Playhouse). He was a retired director for the Four Seasons Arts Council and was a past member on the investment committee of the Community Foundation of Henderson County. He served on the Capital Funds Committee of Pardee Memorial Hospital. He was a senior adviser for Augusta National Golf Club.

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, where he was past president of the Commercial Chemical Development Association.

Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn A. Sears; daughter, Beatrice S. Bruce of Spartanburg, S.C.; son, Carlton A. Sears III of Glen Aubrey, N.Y.; two sisters, Betty Gillooly of Buffalo and Jeanne Cameron of Saratoga, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church by the Rev. R. Stanley Sheffer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. John in the Wilderness Historic Churchyard Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 185, Flat Rock, N.C. 28731 or the Pardee Hospital Foundation, 244 Fifth Ave., Suite B, Hendersonville, N.C. 28791.
