WINIFRED P. DEVERE

Winifred Pearl DeVere, 85, died Jan. 16, 1997, in Hillhaven Nursing Center.

Born in Blue Hill, Maine, Mrs. DeVere was the widow of James J. DeVere Jr. A graduate of Brewer High School, Brewer, Maine, Class of 1929, she was retired as a buyer for Cortell Segals Clothiers, Bangor, Maine, after 18 years of dedicated service. She worked as a florist for Lougee and Fredericks and also owned a florist business. She was a member of the Women in Church, Order of the Eastern Star and ward clerk and chairman for the Republican party in Brewer; past president of Brewer P.T.A., Cub Scout den mother; and supporter of missionary activities, and had served as a hospital volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Earl Bolton and Euzilla Leach Gott.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James J. DeVere III and Gale DeVere of Suffolk; granddaughters, Kim Burchard of Menasha, Wisc., Jill DeVere, a missionary in Odessa, Ukraine; great-grandsons, Willie and Hayden Burchard of Menasha; and sisters-in-law, Avis Jordan and Charlotte Gray of Brewer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Suffolk, by the Revs. Mark Youndt and Ruffin Alphin. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997, in Calvary Baptist Church, Brewer, by the Rev. Larry Pawson. Burial will be private. Friends may join the family in Hill Funeral Home, from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday for visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Suffolk.
