MANTEO MAN ARRESTED ON SEX OFFENSE CHARGE

James A. Mills Jr., 50, of Manteo, was arrested Thursday and charged with a sexual offense with a girl under 13.

Mills was charged with one count of first-degree statutory sex offense, which occurred between May 1 and Aug. 1, 1996. He was held overnight at Dare Detention Center and released Friday on $15,000 secured bond.

He was ordered to remain in his house between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The charge results from an investigation conducted by the Dare County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Mills is employed as an engineer at an Outer Banks radio station, and formerly worked at another station as an announcer.

He previously was charged with 16 counts of unemployment insurance fraud and one count of third-degree sexual exploitation. He was released on $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled to be tried Jan. 27 on those offenses in Dare County Superior Court.
