Michelle Andersen takes shelter from the cold Friday in a phone
booth as she waits for her husband, Theron Andersen, on the warfare
delivery submarine James K. Polk, at left. After participating in
the largest NATO exercise in the Mediterranean Sea during 1996, the
Polk returned home to Norfolk Naval Station to end a six-month
deployment. Led by Cmdr. Jim Pillsbury, the Polk normally carries a
crew of 132. When special warfare forces are aboard, the number
often exceeds 200.
