James E. ``Baby Ray' Riddick Sr., 76, of the 1400 block of Whittamore Road, died Jan. 16, 1997, in Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth.
Born in Norfolk, he retired 26 years ago as a rigger for Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 32 years service. He was a member and deacon of St. Thomas AMEZ Church, Chesapeake, also participating as church treasurer, chairman of the trustee board, president of senior choir, superintendent of Sunday School and member of all-male chorus. Mr. Riddick received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. He was civic league president, member of Improve Lodge No. 192, P.H. Masons, Greenleaf, male chorus of Virginia Beach.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Riddick; a daughter, Mrs. Ella L. Williams of Moyock, N.C.: goddaughter, Mrs. Carrie Bates of Chesapeake; a son, James Riddick Jr. of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hinton, Mrs. Marie Nickolas, both of Chesapeake; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in New Weeping Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Charles Conley and the Rev. John C. Smith. Burial will be in St. Thomas AMEZ Church Cemetery, Chesapeake. The family will assemble at his residence at 1:15 p.m. for procession to the church. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
