Southgate (Dick) Leigh Butt Jr. passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at home. He was 77.
He was born in Norfolk and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 38 years. Mr. Butt was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II and had retired from the telephone company after 47 years of service. He was a Master Mason of Corinthian Lodge No. 0266 of Norfolk and a Shriner of Sudan Temple of New Bern, N.C.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Butt; two daughters, Shelia Anne Plank and her husband, Terry, Terry Leigh Brubaker and her husband, Craig, all of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Carol Faye Morgan and her husband, Dugan, of Virginia Beach; a sister, Doris Dederich and her husband, Jerry, of Winter Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home, Hampton. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, with James C. Townsend officiating.
