CHESTER F. RIEGLE

Chester F. Riegle, 76, died Jan. 17, 1997.

Born in Lafayette, Ind., he received his B.S. from Purdue University, his M.A. from University of Michigan and did post-graduate work at Boston University. He entered the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man, served in World War II and the Korean War, and retired as a commander, Supply Corps, U.S.N. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with the Bronze Star.

He taught English at Purdue University, Boston University and the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon retirement, he began teaching at Tidewater Community College as an associate professor of English. He was a member of Norfolk Savoyards, Cantata Chorus of Norfolk, Poetry Society of Virginia, Virginia Opera Chorus and a former recipient of the Irene Leache Poetry Award.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lillian C. Riegle; a son, Charles Riegle, and his wife, Daryl Raskin, of Norfolk; a daughter, Dr. Carolyn Riegle, and her husband, Bill Fenzan, of Norfolk; a sister, Jane Kibler of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, William Riegle of Lafayette, Ind., Robert Riegle of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son-in-law, Dr. Robert Applegate of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Leah, Emma and Alexander Riegle, Amanda Fenzan, and Ryan, Kristin and Katelyn Applegate. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jeanne Applegate, and two sisters, Mary Marsh and Margaret Chadwick.

A memorial service will be held at noon Tuesday in the chapel at the Naval Amphibious Base at Little Creek. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters or Tidewater Community College general scholarship fund.
