Legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno headlines the celebrities on hand Tuesday for the Norfolk Sports Club's 52nd annual Jamboree. It will be held at the Omni Waterside hotel in downtown Norfolk.
Paterno will be the featured speaker at the banquet Tuesday night and will witness a program heavy on honoring local athletes and state-of-Virginia college programs.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Jim Pyne, formerly of Virginia Tech, will present Hokies coach Frank Beamer with the Sports Club's award as the outstanding college coach. Beamer guided the Hokies to a 10-2 record last season and a berth in the Orange Bowl against Nebraska. He was named Big East coach of the year for the second consecutive season.
Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl defensive end William Fuller, an Indian River High School and North Carolina grad, will present Tar Heels defensive back Dre' Bly with the award as top national collegiate player. Bly, a redshirt freshman from Western Branch, set a school and ACC record and led the nation with 11 interceptions in the regular season. He added two more in North Carolina's Gator Bowl victory over West Virginia.
He's the only player in ACC history to average one interception per game and his total broke the 31-year league record of eight held by Maryland's Bob Sullivan.
And ACC commissioner Gene Corrigan, formerly athletic director at Notre Dame and Virginia, will present Cavaliers running back Tiki Barber with the club's award as the top collegiate player in the state. Barber, from Roanoke, led the Cavaliers this season with 1,360 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Tim Brando of CBS Sports will emcee the program, which begins at 6 p.m.
Tickets to the Jamboree banquet are $65 each. A table of 10 can be reserved for $600. For all information, call the Norfolk Sports Club at 497-9583.
