Horald ``Mac'' Hughes, 74, of Burrell Ave. died Jan. 15, 1997.
Mr. Hughes retired as commander in the U.S. Navy after 30 years and retired as materials manager from the City of Norfolk. He was self-employed as president of Security Accountant Associates. A native of New Bern, N.C., Mr. Hughes was a Baptist and life member of V.F.W. 3160, member of Fleet Reserve Association No. 60, Anchor Masonic Lodge AF&AM, Key West, Fla., for 32 years, and the National Gourd Society. He was a volunteer annual tax accountant for the elderly with the USAA and a Navy veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy N. Hughes; two daughters, Joyce Mathews of Norfolk and Pat Hughes of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Earl Hughes and Millard Hughes of Kinston, N.C.; four sisters, Talmar Whitehurst of Grifton, N.C, Emma Kass of Kinston, Shelby Madison of Fayetteville, N.C., and Daisye Plisch of Smyrna, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Allen Hoke Hughes and a sister, Peggy Hughes Bridges.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Joyce Kramer. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors. Contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters Cancer, AIDS and Research Program.
