Mary (Vivian) Smith Bess, 51, of Route 3, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 1997, in Norfolk Sentara General Hospital.
She was a Norfolk native and the daughter of William E. Smith and Irma Trailkill Smith, both of Chesapeake, a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years and a member of Perkins United Methodist Church. She was the wife of Thomas Ray Bess of the home.
Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Bess is survived by two sons, Thomas Ray Bess Jr., and Steven Darryl Bess, both of Moyock; three brothers, William E. Smith Jr. and John Randall Smith, both of Chesapeake, and Robert Lynn Smith of Moyock; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sanderlin Cemetery, Shawboro, with the Rev. C.H. Wellons officiating. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge.
