SKIM DELUX NOW FORTIFIED WITH CALCIUM

THE ORIGINAL Skim Delux milk was introduced in mid-1994. Now, Richfood Dairy is supplying local grocers with a fat-free Calcium-fortified Skim Delux.

An 8-ounce serving provides 500 milligrams of calcium, 67 percent more calcium than regular milk. That's more than half of the Recommended Daily Value for most people.

And, a serving of Calcium-fortified Skim Delux contains 80 calories, about the same as regular skim milk.

Calcium-fortified Skim Delux is made by adding dietary fiber and a calcium additive to regular skim milk.

An informal office tasting found Skim Delux richer and creamier than regular skim milk and 2 percent milk, the tasters' personal preferences. None of our testers tasted the added ingredients.

Tasters disagreed on whether the added calcium benefit was worth the extra cost. Skim Delux's suggested retail price is $1.99 per half gallon.

Calcium is the word.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation, the Calcium Information Center and the nation's milk processors are trying to tackle the nation's calcium deficiency with their new slogan: ``Drink 3.''

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage people to drink three glasses of milk a day to ensure that they receive the needed calcium.

Calcium is an essential mineral that is deficient in the American diet. Nine out of 10 women and two-thirds of all men fail to meet daily requirements.

A calcium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, one of the most common nutrition-related disorders.
