Elsie Magdeline Bell Hoggard, 84, of the 200 block of Idlewood Ave., died Jan. 20, 1997.
Mrs. Hoggard, a native of Dunn, N.C., was the former owner and operator of Mary's Delicatessen in Norfolk for 40 years and was known to her customers as ``Mary.'' She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and was the widow of James O. Hoggard.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Antoinette Sayre and Harry S. Sayre of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Shea and Kevin Sayre; four sisters, Maggie Ireland of Portsmouth, Marguerite B. Southerland and her husband, Col. J.T. Southerland of St. Matthews, S.C., Hazel Foltz and her husband, John Foltz of Duck, N.C., Hilda Brush and her husband, A.P. Brush of Norfolk; a host of nieces and nephews which include Elsie A. Mounie and her husband, Robert E. Mounie Jr. of Portsmouth; and great-nieces and -nephews, Gayle Smith, Robert Mounie, Christine Worley and Lisa Mounie-Shelburne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters or St. Paul's Catholic Church Building Fund.
