Walter R. Johansen, 72, a retired Navy chief gunner's mate, died Jan. 20, 1997, at home.
Mr. Johansen, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., retired from the Navy after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He also retired after 13 years with the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Mr. Johansen was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a member of Fleet Reserve Unit Branch 60.
Survivors include his wife, Loyse Sara Johansen; son, Victor C. Johansen, and his wife, Gail, of Alpharetta, Ga.; daughter, Faye Kristine Hogge, and her husband, Bill, of Norfolk; brother, Alfred A. Johansen of Florida; and three grandchildren, Eric Johansen, Adam Hogge and Allison Hogge.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. John Lutheran Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Norfolk Seaman's Friend Society or to St. John Lutheran Church. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge.
