Thelma Fisher Mullen passed away Jan. 21, 1997, at Marian Manor Nursing Home at 83 years of age.
She was a resident at Marian Manor for the past four years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph. Thelma is survived by her sons, Joseph Mullen Jr. of Virginia Beach, Carl Mullen of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Paula Williams of Woodbridge, Va., Patricia Hutton of Mobile, Ala.; grandsons, Joseph Michael Mullen III of Baton Rouge, La., Jeffrey Mullen of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Julie Mullen of Garner, N.C.; great-grandsons, Jeremy and Jared Mullen of Baton Rouge, La. She is also survived by a sister, Berniece Lay of Holly Hill, Fla.
Thelma was born in Wagner, Okla., on March 29, 1913. She and Joseph lived most of their lives in Hutchinson, Greenbush and Wichita, Kan. They were retired in Apache Junction, Ariz., for 20 years prior to moving to Virginia Beach.
Thelma was active in All Saints Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Mesa, Ariz. She contributed to the community by her many hours of volunteering her service for the library, Meals on Wheels, and the program for calling the shut-ins daily. Thelma was active in speaking before the Arizona State Legislature to secure Meals on Wheels. She was honored as an Outstanding Woman of the Year for her work.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, where there will be a wake service at 8 p.m. There will be a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church with burial following at Rosewood Memorial Park.
