WILLIAM C. MAHONEY

Retired U.S. Army Col. William Cone Mahoney, 81, of the 1600 block of Claud Lane, died Jan. 18, 1997, in his residence. His joy of life - a ``coup de foudre.''

Col. Mahoney was a native of Tampa, Fla., and a resident of Norfolk since 1961. He retired from the Army as a colonel in 1961. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and received numerous medals including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, French Croix de Guerre with palm, Belgium Croix de Guerre with palm, Order of Leopold with rosette, Berlin Air Lift Device, and was wounded at the assault on Omaha Beach. Following his retirement, he was director of aeronautical systems with Northrop Corporation, where he was employed from 1961 to 1987.

Col. Mahoney was a graduate of Georgia Tech and was a member of the Retired Officers Association; Norfolk Yacht and Country Club; and the Tidewater Big Train Operators.

Survivors include his wife, May Swenson Mahoney; three daughters, Leslie Randolph Kraft of Lantana, Fla., Michaela M. Hargrave, Esq., of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Elizabeth M. Barber of Savannah, Ga.; two sons, William C. Mahoney III of Fredericksburg, Va., Ormonde Mahoney, M.D., of Athens, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Thais D. Weibel, M.D., of Bethesda, Md.; three stepsons, Randall S. Weibel of Norfolk, Ronald M. Weibel of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. Stuart L. Weibel of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Winifred Jeeves of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren.

A church service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe, Hampton. Burial with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe, Hampton, Va. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
