Authorities evacuated eight homes in the Larrymore Lawns area for several hours Tuesday night so they could remove 11 sticks of dynamite and some military ordnance found in a garage that had been vacant since August.

Norfolk's Fire Prevention Unit received a call about 4 p.m. from a person in the 8500 block of Jolima Ave. who reported finding several suspicious items in a garage while cleaning, according to Jack Goldhorn, a spokesman for Norfolk's Fire and Paramedical Services.

Norfolk arson and fire prevention units went to the home and verified the contents, Goldhorn said. Virginia State Police bomb disposal units were called, along with a Navy explosive disposal unit, which was asked to remove some smoke grenades and pop flares.
