Police are investigating an accident in which a 73-year-old Kill Devil Hills grandmother died when her car was struck by a pickup at an intersection on U.S. 158.
Hilda Lorraine Frere was pronounced dead at the Outer Banks Medical Center at 10:42 a.m. Sunday. Dare County EMS had attempted resuscitation at the scene.
Frere's 12-year-old granddaughter Charlotte Midgett, the front-seat passenger in the 1995 Toyota Corolla, was slightly injured. The Kill Devil Hills girl was treated at the Outer Banks Medical Center and released.
Police said Samuel A. Kistler, 35, of Kill Devil Hills, was traveling south on U.S. 158 in a 1995 Chevrolet pickup owned by his Kitty Hawk employer, B.C. Custom Builders. As Frere started to make a left turn onto the bypass from Third Street the truck struck the Toyota near the driver's side, police said.
Kistler was alone and was not hurt. An investigation is being conducted by Kill Devil Hills Police Officer Michael Moore.
